Flamborough has great history dating back to thousands of years. Only few people know about that as some of the road names represent ancient history. Europeans settled in this part of the land during late eighteenth century, 1780 to be precise. The French connection existed way back from 1600. Evidence has also been found that civilization did exist in 5000 BC.
After the geographical formation of the township during 1792, Flamborough cottages came into existence in the eastern part of Yorkshire in England. In the year 1816, Flamborough township became part of the Halton county. During 1854 the county system was completed. It was further divided into two separate townships and was known as East and West Flamborough.
In the eastern part of the Flamborough, the population centre was known as Waterdown. That is because people of this region were very close to a place which was originally known as Great falls. During the early nineteenth century, this site was converted into the industrial belt where the number of mills were built so that they can harness the power of water sources available over there.
There is no written documentation available however it is said that Waterdown was named by Ebenezer Griffin who settled down in this area during 1832 and created number of villages and the community of the village is known as Waterdown.
The waterway in the Western part of Flamborough is known as Spencer Creek. Water flow of this creek area was too strong to provide power to many numbers of mills in this area. The area which is now known as Greensville area where James Crooks created lots of mills by harnessing water power. |
